Jockey Pulleys and Spindle Tapes: Keeping the Ring Frame Drive Efficient
Vindex technical notes · 29 Sep 2026
Every spindle on a ring frame is driven by a tape from the tin roller drum, and the jockey pulley keeps that tape at the right tension. It is a small, cheap component, but the whole drive depends on it: a free-spinning pulley with correct tension means full spindle speed at minimum power, while a stiff or noisy pulley silently costs energy, tape life and spindle speed across the section.
Correct tape tension — and what slack costs
Tape tension must be firm enough to drive the spindle without slipping, but not so tight that it overloads bearings. Slack tapes slip on the wharve: the spindle runs below its set speed, twist drops, and the drive wastes power as heat and friction.
Jockey pulley bearing condition
The pulley must spin freely on its bearing. Spin each pulley by hand during maintenance rounds: it should rotate smoothly and silently. Roughness, noise, or wobble means the bearing is failing. A failing bearing adds drag, which is exactly the same as a slack tape — lost spindle speed and wasted energy — and it will only get worse until it seizes.
How a seized pulley ruins tapes
When a pulley seizes, the tape drags across a stationary surface instead of rolling over it. The tape overheats, glazes, stretches and finally snaps — often stopping a row of spindles. Replacing a pulley at the first sign of stiffness is far cheaper than replacing the tapes it will destroy.
Inspection routine
Build pulley checks into the regular maintenance round: listen for bearing noise while the frame runs and spin-test pulleys during stops. Keep the pulley area free of fly build-up, which works into bearings and shortens their life.
Replace pulleys or tapes?
Replace the pulley when its bearing is rough, noisy, or seized — a new tape on a bad pulley will fail again quickly. Replace tapes when they are stretched, glazed, frayed, or have lost their grip, even if the pulleys are good. When one tape in a section fails from age, check the rest of the section: tapes installed together age together.
Alignment matters too
A good pulley in the wrong position still causes trouble. Check that each pulley sits square to the tape run and the tape tracks centrally on the wharve — if tapes keep jumping on one section, suspect alignment before blaming tape quality.

Frequently asked questions
How can a jockey pulley affect spindle tape drive?
Tape tension and pulley bearing condition affect the drive arrangement. The guide describes slipping, slack tape and the consequences of a seized pulley.
What belongs in a jockey-pulley inspection?
Inspect the tape, pulley rotation, bearing condition and tension arrangement. Identify the pulley dimensions and machine reference before ordering a replacement.
