LMW LR6 & LR9 Spindle Brake: Wear Signs and Replacement Guide
Vindex technical notes · 1 Oct 2026
On a ring frame, the spindle brake is a small component with an outsized job: it decides how fast a doffing crew can work. A healthy brake stops the spindle in seconds; a worn one stretches every doff, makes piecing-up harder, and quietly eats into shift output.
What the spindle brake does
When the operator presses the brake lever, a friction pad presses against the spindle wharve and brings the spindle to a quick, controlled stop for doffing and piecing. On LMW LR6 and LR9 frames the brake sits close to the wharve, so even small wear in the pad changes stopping behaviour noticeably.
Wear signs to watch
Spindles that take longer to stop than their neighbours are the first clue. Squealing or grinding when the brake is applied, visible brake dust around the wharve, and a pad that looks thin, glazed or cracked all mean the friction material is spent. Uneven stopping across a section — some spindles halt fast while others drag on — points to brakes wearing at different rates.
Adjust or replace?
Check lever travel and linkage first; sometimes a simple adjustment restores bite. But if the pad material is thin, glazed or cracked, adjustment only buys days. Never run a brake down to metal-on-metal — it scores the wharve, and a damaged wharve costs far more than a brake.
Choosing the right replacement
Match the brake to the frame: LR6 and LR9 fittings differ, so confirm the model before ordering. Look for consistent friction material that beds in quickly and holds its bite, and a mounting that seats without play. A loose brake chatters, wears unevenly and shortens its own life.
Replacement tips from the shop floor
Stop the frame and lock out before working on brakes. Replace brakes in sets across a section rather than one by one, so every spindle in the doffing round stops the same way. After fitting, bed new pads in with a few gentle stops before returning to full doffing speed.

Frequently asked questions
What should be checked on an LMW LR6 or LR9 spindle brake?
Review brake wear, its operation and the machine-specific replacement pattern. This guide discusses when adjustment or replacement deserves consideration.
What information helps identify the replacement brake?
Provide the LMW model, a photograph of the fitted brake and its reference or dimensions. Identify LR6 and LR9 requirements separately.
