High End Breakage on Your Ring Frame? Check the Spindles First

Vindex technical notes · 1 Oct 2026

When end breakage climbs, the first suspect is usually the fibre or the draft settings. But in many mills the real culprit sits lower: the spindle. A spindle that vibrates, runs slow or wobbles adds irregular tension to every metre of yarn it spins — and tension spikes break ends.

Five spindle-side checks

1. Vibration. Touch the bolster housing — a healthy spindle runs smooth and quiet. Buzzing or rattling means worn bearings or a bent blade.
2. Bolster oil. Low or degraded oil overheats the bolster and slows the spindle; check levels and oil condition.
3. Spindle tape. A loose or glazed tape lets the spindle slip, so its speed — and the yarn twist — varies. See our notes on spindle tape slipping.
4. Spindle alignment. A spindle that is not centred under the ring tilts the traveller and chafes the yarn.
5. Worn wharve. A scored or polished wharve grips the tape poorly and runs erratic.

What to do about it

Work position by position: mark the high-break spindles, run the five checks, and replace or service only what fails. Blanket replacement wastes money; targeted replacement fixes the break rate. If several spindles show the same wear, the whole section is due — read 7 signs your spindles need replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What should be checked when end breaks may be spindle-related?

Use the spindle-side inspection checklist in this guide. Review the spindle and its supporting components alongside the other possible causes of end breaks.

Should a spindle be replaced immediately when end breaks increase?

First identify the cause using inspection and the machine maintenance procedure. Provide the machine reference and observed symptoms when asking about a replacement.
