Spindle Bolster Lubrication: Oil Selection and Change Intervals
Vindex technical notes · 29 Sep 2026
Inside every ring-frame bolster, the spindle blade spins on a thin film of oil at speeds up to 25,000 RPM and beyond. That film carries the entire radial load, damps vibration, and removes heat. Get the oil right and the bolster runs cool and quiet for years. Get it wrong — wrong grade, old oil, low level — and the result is hot bolsters, vibration, end breaks, and in the worst case a seized blade that destroys the bolster.
Why the oil film matters at high RPM
At high speed the blade never touches metal; it rides on hydrodynamic pressure in the oil film. The film must be thick enough to separate the surfaces yet thin enough to keep damping effective and drag low. When the film breaks down, metal-to-metal contact starts, temperature climbs within minutes, and wear accelerates rapidly. Most premature bolster failures trace back to lubrication, not to the bolster itself.
Choosing viscosity by spindle speed
Use the oil grade the machine maker specifies for your speed range — typically a light spindle oil, with lower viscosity for higher speeds. Oil that is too thick increases drag and bolster temperature; oil that is too thin cannot hold the film at load and speed. When changing speed ranges (for example after a modernisation), recheck the grade instead of continuing with the old oil out of habit.
Change intervals and top-up practice
Follow a fixed schedule: drain and refill at the maker's interval, and top up between changes to keep the level at the mark — never let a bolster run low. Use clean, dedicated filling equipment, and record oil changes per frame so no section is missed.
Reading degraded oil
Check oil condition during rounds. Fresh spindle oil is clear; darkening, a burnt smell, or visible particles mean it is breaking down. A bolster running noticeably hotter than its neighbours is a warning — feel the bolster tubes during patrol and investigate hot ones before they fail. Rising noise or vibration from a previously quiet spindle often appears before temperature does.
Contamination control
Fly, dust and moisture are the enemies of the oil film. Keep bolster caps and seals in good condition, clean the area around the bolster before opening it, and never mix oil grades in the same bolster.
Storage and handling
Store spindle oil sealed, indoors, away from heat and sunlight. Decant only what is needed and keep containers labelled by grade.

Frequently asked questions
What information matters when choosing spindle oil?
Use the spindle type, operating speed and the machine or insert lubrication guidance. The guide explains oil-film behaviour and viscosity selection.
What should be reviewed when the oil appears degraded?
Check oil condition together with the top-up and change practice. Investigate contamination and operating conditions rather than treating an oil change as the only remedy.
