Spindle Oil Specification Guide: VG Grades & DIN 51517

Vindex technical notes · 12 Oct 2026

Using the wrong oil grade is one of the most common causes of premature spindle bolster failure. This guide explains the ISO VG grading system, the DIN 51517-CLP specification, and exactly which grade each HF and HZ series type needs.

Vindex Industries manufactures precision spindle bolsters in Surendranagar, Gujarat, India — exported to 87 countries.

What Is DIN 51517-CLP?

DIN 51517-CLP is the German standard for high-grade circulating and spindle oils. It requires solvent-refined base oil with anti-wear, anti-oxidant and anti-corrosion additives. A typical compliant oil is Beruspin Highgrade 10 (= ISO VG 10).

ISO VG Grades Explained

GradeViscosity at 40°CUsed For
VG 10~10 cStHigh-speed HF inserts, HZ 33/44
VG 22~22 cStHZ 35/55/66/68/77 standard duty
VG 46~46 cStHZ 66/68/77 heavy load
VG 68~68 cStSuppressed balloon applications
VG 100~100 cStHZ 55–77 suppressed yarn balloon

Golden Rules

1. Never mix grades — drain completely before changing grade.
2. Thicker is not better — too thick oil at high speed causes overheating.
3. Suppressed balloon = heavier oil — HZ 55–77 with suppressed balloon heads need ISO VG 100.
4. Coat bearings at every change — coat the roller bearing thoroughly with fresh oil before service.

As a textile spindle manufacturer in India, Vindex Industries supplies the correct lubrication data with every bolster shipped to 87 countries.
