The problem: fine counts going wrong
At a leading Indian textile group, the Veejay Lakshmi VJ-100M machines were in very bad condition — and it showed where it hurts most: the fine counts. The customer was struggling with quality problems on fine yarn, and the machines needed more than a quick fix.
On fine counts there is nowhere to hide. Even small wear in the drive line shows up in the yarn, so a partial repair — one part changed, the rest left — was never going to settle it.
What inspection found
The suggestion after inspection was straightforward: the spindle bolsters, jockey pulleys, pulley spacers, spindle tapes, brake shoes and belts all needed replacement. And the customer had not changed a single part since buying the machines in 2015.
Eleven years of running on original parts, across the whole drive line, had left nothing in the assembly that could still be trusted on fine counts. There was no point changing one part and leaving the rest.
What was changed — and what was kept
New blades and new pulleys were fitted in the spindles, and everything was refitted with all-new bearing bushes, bringing the assemblies back to same-as-new condition. New spindle bolsters were also supplied.
Here is the part the customer appreciated most: the discs did not need replacing. The advice was to keep the existing discs — they could be recoated and reused — so the rebuild kept every part that still had life in it, and changed only the parts that did not.
The result
After the overhaul, the customer is getting better performance than before, and the yarn TPI has improved on the fine counts. A machine written off as being in bad condition is producing again — because the right parts were changed, and the parts that still had life were kept.
The lesson for other mills
An overhaul is an inspection decision, not a parts list copied from another mill. This case describes one assembly and its findings: the machines, the years of running, and the condition found on inspection. Another frame needs its own inspection and part identification before an overhaul is specified — the same result cannot be assumed for a different machine.
