Woolen Spindle Selection Guide: Ring Diameter, Materials and Machine Fit
Vindex technical notes · 29 Sep 2026
Woolen, worsted and jute ring frames work coarser counts and heavier packages than cotton ring frames, so their spindles live a different life: larger rings, heavier bobbins, lower speeds but higher loads. Choosing the right spindle means matching ring diameter to the count range, picking the right material for the duty, and confirming the fit on your machine make.
Ring diameter: 3–8 inch and what it means
Woolen spindles cover ring diameters from 3 to 8 inch, far larger than cotton practice. Larger rings suit coarser counts and bigger packages but need lower spindle speeds to keep traveller speed within limits; smaller rings allow finer counts at higher speeds. Match the spindle and ring to the count range you actually spin — running a coarse count on a small-ring setup wastes package size, while forcing fine counts on large rings overloads the traveller.
Spindle materials: EN31, LM6 and EN24
The blade and bolster materials are chosen for the duty. EN31 bearing steel gives hard, wear-resistant running surfaces for the blade and bolster bore. LM6 aluminum alloy is used for light, corrosion-resistant components such as plugs and adaptors. EN24 alloy steel serves where higher strength and toughness are needed under heavy package loads.
Machine compatibility
Woolen, worsted and jute ring frames come from makers such as JMW, Allma, Huzur Makina and similar builders, and spindle dimensions vary between them — bolster diameter, blade length, wharve size and mounting must all match. Always confirm the machine make and model before ordering.
Speed and load for coarse counts
Coarse counts mean heavy bobbins, and a full bobbin multiplies the load on the bolster. Run within the rated speed for the spindle and ring combination — pushing speed on a heavy package raises vibration, end breaks and bolster temperature together.
Balancing and running true
At woolen-frame speeds, an out-of-balance or bent spindle still causes real damage over time: uneven package build, worn bolster bores and excess noise. Check new spindles for true running on installation and investigate any spindle that runs rough — with heavy packages, small faults grow into big ones.
Lubrication and upkeep
Heavy-duty woolen bolsters need the same lubrication discipline as high-speed spindles: correct oil grade, proper level, and scheduled changes. A short daily patrol — listening for rough spindles and feeling for hot bolsters — catches problems while they are cheap to fix.

Frequently asked questions
What should be specified for a woolen or worsted spindle?
State the fibre and process, machine reference, ring diameter, package requirements and spindle dimensions. Use these together when selecting a heavy-duty assembly.
Can a woolen spindle be selected by machine brand alone?
The brand identifies a machine family, but the required spindle also depends on dimensions, package duty and the existing configuration.
